    I just use my HO scale ruler to determine height, width and depth. The scale has helped me make my HO scale lumber for my Atlas lumber company and I scratch built a lumber drying shed to go with it. I also have a MicroMart mini table saw so I can cut my scale lumber. I downloaded paper wrapper labels from the interweb. Cheers from eastern TN

    Hey Terry! Thanks for the shout out! I have the same gripe with the hoods and the weight of the car. Which both issues can be alleviated with a little work (if you're wanting to run the car empty with no hoods). But, overall a beautiful and much needed freight car.

    But surely it would be better if it was powered otherwise you are just dragging around another wagon or box car equivalent... run the wires to the edge of the loco and attach a plug and then a small pair of wires to the front loco and a plug and then plug the both together then you have extra track pick ups and 2 motors pulling instead of just one...

    • @PennCentral99

      Yes, you can look at it that way. But some people may not want to go that route and this gives someone another option. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I like Walthers Proto 2000 metal wheel sets better than Intermountain. I've tried both and prefer the Walthers. Kadee's are a must for my rolling stock and have to be body mounted. I also save all those plastic wheel sets and plastic knuckle couplers for future gondola and flatcar loads. I also always check coupler height with the Kadee gauge and make sure the rolling stock is up to NMRA weight standards. Cheers from eastern TN

    I've never used the SMD LED's. I use either 3mm or 5mm LED's depending on what I'm doing with them. For illuminating coaches I always use 12 volt LED strip lighting with keep alive circuits. The first strip of LED lights I ordered the bright white which were actually too bright for my liking and the period that I model. So, I painted each LED with some yellow acrylic paint and now they are perfect. The next strip of LED's I ordered were warm white. One learns from ones mistakes. I even use the LED bulb itself for a lens most of the time. Cheers from eastern TN

    This 'solution' misses the major weak point in the Atlas and many other turnout designs. That weak point is where the point rails are connected to the closure rails. The small tabs on the backs of the point rails that are folded inside of the contact holes on the closure rails are a problem waiting to happen. Many people have said that they have never had a problem with power flowing through the point rails, but I wonder how many of those people are talking about turnouts that have been in place for long time periods. What should be added to the Atlas and other turnouts are jumpers between the closure rails and the point rails. This is easier said than done, but it will guarantee that you will never have an electrical contact failure in the turnouts.

    • @LenPenzo
      @LenPenzo 7 місяців тому

      Yep ... installing a complicated yard right now and, unfortunately, I am dealing with three Atlas Code 55 turnouts where at least one of the closure rails was dead as a door nail. I can only assume the factory jumper was weak/broken before I installed it. Point rails get power (because connection to stock rails are good and tight). Oh, well. Live and learn. I'll be installing my own jumpers from stock to closure rails from now on - before installation.

    Well here I am in 2023 finally getting around to doing this myself, I watched this years ago. Is this the dsm8 narrow speaker? Also wondering what lights I should get..I know there are lots of options today! My bachmann gp40 has a resistor on the negative side of the motor that I also have not decided if I should remove or not. wondering if it was on yours too. Very nice build! Glad I still have this as a reference.

    • @PennCentral99
      @PennCentral99 Рік тому

      Hello and welcome back, I'm honored you still refer to this video! Yes, it is the Railmaster Hobbies DSM8. As you have indicated, the industry has changed and there are many options. For speakers, I would go with Scale Sound Speakers, they have drop in speakers designed for specific models and the sound quality is awesome. As far as lights, I use SMD's from HDA Modelworx, they come with built in resistors for about $1 each. Yes, my Bachmann's have those resistors, I was told they are for the European market, don't think it matters whether or not you remove them, but I would leave them. Let me know if you need any more help. Thanks again for watching and commenting!

      @@PennCentral99 Thanks so much! I did some research and found out the resistors are actually inductors to minimize electromagnetic interference, so I went ahead and left those.
